The Shiranui clan was originally a crime family of Kirigakure at its very founding. Soon afterwards, however, an extremely powerful ninja delivered the clan to "justice", cursing their DNA forever by placing a powerful curse seal upon it. Throughout the next few years, the clan discovered that if they bred outside of the clan, the power that they had gained from the seal would disappear. Thus was the end to their power in crime, as they could no longer do diplomatic marriages and such. Instead, they retired from the crime scene and focused on shinobi practices.
In order to maintain their power, they had to result to extreme measures: incest and inbreeding. Essentially, they forced siblings and cousins into marriage in order to maintain the curse seal gene.
